This cookbook is a collection of Oma Gerhild’s tried-and-true baking recipes, with beautiful black-and-white photos and helpful hints and tips, for the traditional Black Forest Cherry Cake (plus a super easy version), Apple Strudel, Pretzels, Rye Bread, Chocolate Cream Torte, Cream Puffs, Lebkuchen, Marzipan, and dozens more.

Re-create Oma’s Traditional German baked treats right in your kitchen, regardless of where in the world you live. Gerhild Fulson, founder of the blog, Just Like Oma, was born in Germany and learned how to bake delicious bread, rolls, tortes, and Christmas treats at her Mutti’s side.

You’ll find many recipes have Oma’s Ecke (Grandma’s Corner) with extra info, such as what to do if you don’t have a bread machine, for the very few recipes that may use it. Also included are some unusual coloring pages scattered throughout that contain special baking tips and hints to help you as you travel through this German baking adventure together with Oma.

And to make it easier for everyone, these recipes are adjusted to also include standard US measurements instead of weighing the ingredients, which is the norm in Germany. Using local ingredients can be a bit of a challenge, but German baking is actually not that difficult to replicate, especially when you have an Oma beside you.

With easy-to-follow recipes, you’ll soon be enjoying those mouthwatering treats of your childhood. With its special Christmas section, be ready to be enveloped in the aromas of a traditional German Christmas.

So, what do you say? Let’s get baking and create these mouth-watering treats as delectable treasures to pass on to your family, just like Oma Gerhild’s Mutti did for hers.

Notes from Oma Gerhild

Born in Germany, yet growing up in Canada, meant I needed to depend upon the recipes I gleaned from my Mutti. She had experimented in the kitchen using ingredients that were foreign to her to try and capture the flavors that reminded her of the old country. Her creativity and inventiveness won out, and I grew up with German food in my blood.

The recipes that form the core for most of my baking are quick, easy, and delicious, and can be made using local ingredients. They are the ones I’ve always relied on, especially at times when my life was very busy. During those times, having something quick and delicious on the table, such as Apfelstrudel and no-knead Sauerteig Vollkornbrot, was really important to me. Other recipes are more recent, such as Krustenbrot and Friesentorte, and have likewise become staples.

These are some of the dozens of recipes that are in this cookbook. May they also be ones that will become favorites in your house.

Tschüß,

Oma Gerhild

Editorial Reviews

“One of the hardest things about German baking outside of Germany is trying to match those flavors and textures you remember so well. Fortunately, Gerhild Fulson has cracked the code! Not only do the cakes, cookies, and breads taste delicious, she made recipes that are easy for a home baker to re-create. Yes, even the Brötchen! With all of her tips and helpful hints, Gerhild’s book, “Baking Just Like Oma” really does make you feel like Oma is in the kitchen with you.”

— Karen Lodder, Author of Easy German Cookbook & founder of German Girl in America

“Gerhild’s Baking Just Like Oma reminds me of the countless times when I was looking over my Mom’s shoulder, learning to bake traditional German cakes and cookies myself. What a delicious trip down memory lane! A word of caution: do not open the book when you’re hungry!”

— Margit Streifeneder, Founder of Balloon Decoration Guide (Bloonsup) & Digital Marketing Expert

“Baking doesn’t come naturally to me, but this book has shown me that creating delicious breads, cookies, and cakes is possible for me! Growing up in the German-American community, baking is an integral part of the culture and now I can do it at home with my kids. The design of the book makes it easy to skim through what we have time for and ‘Oma’s Ecke’ makes learning those baking tricks easy. Now it’s not only your Grandma knows about those secrets!”

— Erika Neumayer Ehrat, founder & designer of Rare Dirndl
