Total Time: 1-1/2 hours, plus 12 hours chilling time

“The best part was watching the tomatoes pop. The hardest was using the strainer” – Brooke, 11

This ketchup recipe takes everything we love about this condiment and gets there with fresh tomatoes and traditional flavorings such as vinegar, garlic, brown sugar, and allspice. Homemade ketchup has even more tomato flavor than store-bought, making this ketchup extra delicious!

Prepare Ingredients

You can use cherry tomatoes instead of the grape tomatoes, but because they are juicier, you will need to cook them a little longer. In step 3, increase the cooking time to 12 to 15 minutes.

Needed Equipment:

12-inch nonstick skilletRubber SpatulaBlenderDish TowelFine-mesh strainerMedium bowlJar with tight-fitting lid 2-1/4 pounds grape tomatoes 1 garlic clove, peeled 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper Pinch ground allspice

Start Cooking!

“It was the best ketchup I have ever tasted. I loved it.” — Kallie, 12
1. Add all ingredients to 12-inch nonstick skillet. Use rubber spatula to stir to combine. 2. Bring tomato mixture to simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally and scraping bottom of skillet, about 20 minutes. 3. Reduce heat to low and cook until almost all liquid evaporates and spatula leaves distinct trail when dragged across bottom of skillet, 5 to 10 minutes. Turn off heat. Let mixture cool 15 minutes. 4. Ask an adult to carefully transfer tomatoes and liquid to blender jar. Blend mixture until smooth, about 1 minute. 5. Set fine-mesh strainer over medium bowl. Pour tomato mixture into the strainer and use a spatula to stir and press on mixture to push liquid through strainer. Discard solids left in strainer. 6. Cool ketchup to room temperature and then pour ketchup into jar with tight-fitting lid. Refrigerate until chilled and thickened, at least 12 hours. (Ketchup can be refrigerated up to 1 month).
