Real-Life Recipes for Your Favorite Fantasy Foods – Unofficial Recipes from Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and more

So you’re a geek, a nerd, a neo-maxi-zoom-dweebie. Or, you know, maybe you don’t like labels and you’re just really into sci-fi. That’s cool. I’m just guessing here, but you probably also like to eat. Great! Then this book is for you.

Generally, the kind of people who acquire the labels listed above, in addition to being wicked smart and perhaps experiencing a certain amount of social discomfort, tend to have a passion for a piece of work that consumes them. My blog, The Geeky Chef, was the love child of that intense nerd passion and my fondness for cooking.

Really, I have always had a fascination with food in fiction.

When I was six years old, I enlisted my big brother to help me make Tree Star cookies after watching Don Bluth’s The Land Before Time. I also made Unicorn Hair Soup after reading the wonderful YA novel Ella Enchanted when I was slightly older. I could really go on and on with these examples, but the tipping point that inspired The Geeky Chef actually started with a Zelda game.

Romulan Ale, Inspired by Star Trek

Star Trek is the most popular science-fiction creation of all time. If you’re about to say anything or even think anything about Star Wars right now: shhh, stop. Star Wars is not hard science fiction, it’s a space opera. Okay, yes, technically space opera is a sub-genre of science fiction, but still, it’s like comparing GWAR to Fleetwood Mac. I’m not implying that either is better than the other, just that they are not comparable.

Lembas, Inspired by Lord of the Rings

Lembas is the quintessential geeky fictional food. It made its first appearance in Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The flavor of Lembas is never detailed but it is said to be able to fill the belly of a grown man in a few bites, which makes it useful for long journeys. It’s also supposed to taste more pleasant than it’s non-elvish counterpart, Cram (see page 45). If it were not for Lembas, Frodo and Sam would probably not have survived the extremely perilous journey through Mordor.

1UP Mushroom Cakes, Inspired by Super Mario Bros.

Like most people born after 1985, I grew up playing Super Mario Bros. games. The series, created by Nintendo’s very own mad genius Shigeru Miyamoto, is one of the most widely known and beloved game series of all time. The games feature Mario, a portly Italian plumber with inexplicably superior athletic ability and stamina. He is in love with Princess Toadstool, aka Peach. Unfortunately for Mario, the princess is kidnapped by King Koopa, aka Bowser, about every year or so.
